BATTAMBANG - BANGKOK

Day 17 – 19.10.2016

After a short stay in Battambang, we headed onwards towards the Thai border. (Which you can see in the far distance). I was very glad we were accompanied by a tour guide, as the border crossing was very hectic and a couple of hidden rooms for entry and exit were involved.

We all made it through without and further problems. We were in Thailand!! Some of us back to where their journey had started, others like me, there for the first time. We drove on a little while longer and stopped for lunch. I felt like a soup and chose a chicken soup which looked very fresh. Communicating was a little tough, but pointing at chicken parts and to water cups went surprisingly well. Everyone is just very friendly here!

I even tried a chickens foot. Boiled in this soup it tasted just like chicken skin. Wasn’t too bad actually, just a bit difficult to eat it with chopsticks :)

Onwards we headed, finally reaching Bangkok! Definitely a different setting compared to the places we had been to the last couple of days. Bustling with life.

Everywhere in the city the advertisment boards show the late king in black and white. There are also these black and white textiles hung around the entire city in memory of Bhumibol Adulyadej.

A little towel elephant to greet us!

Pre-dinner drinks / lemon juice ice tea.

For dinner we went down to a street parallel to the Khao San Road. It was like a little oasis with air conditioning. (Even though the temperatures aren’t that bad actually during the evening!)

A highlight was definitely the menu – check this out: „Western Cuisines – much better than vegetables“ how true! Or „McDonalds comparable“!!!

So yeah that happened - I had a whole jug of lemon juice.

We shared some cheese fried wan tans.

We also shared some crispy pork belly with thick soy sauce.

And then I had a chicken pad thai – not the best I have had, but I am hoping that that will change through the course of the rest of my trip...

After our farewell dinner, where we had to say good bye to our lovely lovely Channa (tour guide), us girls wanted a „fish massage“so we headed out to the Khao San Road.

The road is exceptionally quiet – obviously as part of the mourning phase here in Bangkok, however now having read up on it means that there are a lot less tourists, and that they tend to move on quickly to other parts of Thailand, especially the beaches there.

We found a fishy place and I forgot how ticklish this procedure is. Maybe these fish were just a little more vicious than the last time I had dead skin nibbled off my feet by fish.... We had a fabulous time however!

Busy but quiet Khao San Road.
