ISLA ISABELA 3

Day 70 18.09.15

We again had breakfast at the hotel and same procedure as every morning; I had some granola, yoghurt and fruit. I was definitely going to need some other type of breakfast at the next hotel in order for me not to go mad…

We headed to the port to go sea kayaking. After a long long explanation of how to properly kayak, some of us got single kayaks, others paired up for double kayaks.

Gee, that was going to go into my arms, kayaking in a single kayak but hey J.

We paddled along some little rock formations with mangroves growing on top of them, paddled past little islands and rocks, saw pelicans flying above us and sitting in the trees, and just enjoyed the scenery.

I got board soon and held onto another solo sea kayak to let myself be pulled along – this worked great! You have to imagine this working as a T. One person paddles (the straight part) and the other hangs on sideways (the top part of the T). Obviously only until the strengths of the paddler in front of me grew weaker and I had to let go.

We came across some penguins, some swam underneath or kayak at the beach, and others were swimming around here to find food. Every once in a while you’d see a head pop up, and then back under the water looking for fish.

At some point I decided to hold on to one of the double kayaks, and that wasn’t too good of an idea. Their combined strength was too strong, and the wave coming from their kayak caused my boat to flip. It was actually quite hilarious, and I somehow managed to get back onto the boat and we carried on. Well, karma is a bitch.

Back at the beach we saw some more sea lions relaxing all around on the benches of the beach.

We moved on to head to a little bay where we could go snorkelling one last time. We had to cross paths with some sea lions, and make sure not to tread on them, and not to be bitten in the process.

We went for a quick swim and I started playing around with the territorial fish on the rocks there. Quite fun as you can see in this video:

We were back for lunch at the hotel and here we had some broccoli soup with squeaky cheese and popcorn. (I have named the squeaky cheese as such, as when you were chewing it, it would cause a squeaky noise underneath your teeth…)

As a main I had some ceviche with plantain and yes, of course lemonade!

After lunch we headed for the port to take our renowned speedboat to Isla Santa Cruz. It was only about another 2,5 hours boat ride, and although the sea was quite rough, everyone managed fine.

When we got to the port of Santa Cruz we hopped onto a water taxi and were brought to the pier. Here we could watch blue footed boobies fishing in full action.

At the end of the pier on of the locals exhibits a project he has been following for a while, where he exhibits all the cigarette buds he has found on the island and has turned them into live size figurines of people. He is trying to get awareness as to how the people are polluting the island with their cigarette buds.

Now to Tina. I feel like I have to go back a couple of days where the whole Tina story started. We were talking about how different words were pronounced differently in Canadian English, UK English and Australian English. I don’t know how, and don’t ask me why, but our conversation lead to incontinence pads, sanitary napkins, or sanitary towels – you name it. We said that the brand “Teena”, would be pronounce “Tehna” in the UK, in the States etc., just in Australia you would call it “Tina”. I asked the Australians how they would pronounce the name “Tina” and they said the same way. So since then Tina, and her Australian pronunciation has been the centre of all laughs. As Tina would have run the hike in less than 2 hours, she would have proclaimed “Game Ova” when I fell into the water and so on and so on.

So now, when we saw this statue we again fell into huge laughter. (Look at the name on the female statue!)

We headed on to our hotel, and just check out the view we had from our hotel balcony! (or pretty much just outside of our room…)

We took a stroll through the town and towards the fish market, where pelicans and sea lions were fighting for the attention of the fishers and their parts of the fish. I suppose it is a great way of recycling fish skin, and it provides a great spectacle for the tourists!

I managed to buy stamps here and the tank top I had been looking for. We headed to a little bar for a drink, I had a great Caipirinha, and then we were off for dinner.

We walked through the streets to get to a place where they served street food. Not the typical street food, more like the guests were sitting at tables on the street, and the aligning restaurants would serve their food.

I had a very special taco, as you can see it is more of a cone. It was alright, but we were keen to move on to a bar.

On our way there we saw a bar, which declared itself as a sushi pub. We didn’t enter but I thought it was a very bizarre idea.

We got to the bar we wanted to go to that had a wonderful relaxed atmosphere.

Unfortunately, too relaxed for me, as I fell tired really quickly. I had some passion fruit and sugar cane cocktail, and soon after, feeling to sleepy, I headed back to the hotel to go to bed.
