Day 34 13.08.15
We woke up late in paradise. These hotel rooms are just very extravagant – so large, with a lovely balcony with a view of the bay. Wonderful! We prepared breakfast and ate on our balcony, some eggs with turkey bacon and bananas.

It started to rain. Or better said, it starting pouring down torrential rain. We headed out into town anyway to see what the town had to offer and to see how it was different to Caye Caulker.

In the lonely planet guide I had read about the option of diving a minimum of 600 feet using a submarine to examine the marine wildlife in these depths. I went and talked to the guy and unfortunately the price was just a little to high, and it definitely needed two people for the dive to take place. It is a very unusual activity though and the submarine was also quite impressive.

Instead we moved on to have a quick drink at the cannibal café. Here friends of the owners took out the parrot “Paco” out of his cage and placed him on her shoulders taking to him, whistling at him to make him repeat the sounds. After having seen these types of birds in the bird sanctuary, I started feeling quite uncomfortable and after two lemonades ( I was so thirsty!) I felt like a quick lunch, and so we all headed out to a restaurant called the Lighthouse.

This restaurant is supposedly “the place to go” for seafood but is extremely expensive. The lonely planet guide let us know that that wasn’t 100% the case for breakfast and lunch, and so I tried the Conch soup there. Meanwhile it was still pouring down like crazy and was slightly destroying our illusion of the perfect Caribbean island.

The conch soup was quite a disappointment the taste just wasn’t up to par. The conch I think was all right but the flavour of the rest was just not very good. As the rain stopped and cleared up, we continued walking about and checking out little shops. I then headed back to the hotel I suddenly had the urge to take a little nap. The little nap turned into a 2 hours snooze, which I apparently had needed desperately.

For dinner we headed out to the cannibal café, where I had some great Philly cheese steak tacos. They were really really good! Two people from our group tried themselves at the burrito challenge. This consisted of eating 3 massive burritos in the span of an hour, in order to win a t-shirt and not have to pay for meal. The boys started out quite fast, but then only ordered the next burrito after they had finished the first. The next burrito therefore came about 20 minutes after the first, giving their stomachs time to build up the sensation of no longer feeling hungry. After the second burrito one of the two gave up, while the other continued visually struggling. Due to the slow service, or better said the delay between the first and the second burrito, the waiter allowed the boys unlimited time to eat the last burrito. He pulled through and managed to eat the last burrito, winning himself the t-shirt, the bragging rights and a free dinner.

We all were ready to let loose and so we went to the Blue Marlin for a karaoke session. As there was about a 50 minutes queue for new songs, we decided against going up ourselves to sing, but opted instead for chanting along on the sidelines. After Bohemian Rapsody and a perfectly 3-voiced harmony country song, we decided to head out and go to a different place.

We found ourselves a local bar / club, where the locals were grinding and winding on the dancefloor. It was a lot of fun, but after about 3 songs we decided it was time to head back to the hotel. Back there we let the evening unwind by sitting on the dock and chatting.
